Have Canada's best musicians write one song each about Calgary, regardless of whether it is positive or not. Then have each artist perform the song live (wherever they are in the world) and broadcast the 'concert' over the internet. Imagine a concert with Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, New Pornographers, Arcade Fire, Feist, Pine Tarts, Brasstronaut, etc. sharing their feelings about Calgary! Even more ambitious would be ...more »
Commission 100 artists, architects, designers, writers, etc. to produce their vision of Calgary in 2112. While we celebrate the history of our city, let's also look forward to imagine what Calgary will be a hundred years from now! Will we have flying cars and clothes that collect solar energy, or will we living along the shores of a vast new ocean after the polar ice caps have melted? What will our architecture look like, ...more »
What a better way to celebrate the history of Calgary than with thousands of historical markers throughout the city? If you've ever been to France, you've probably stopped to read a sleek 'Panneau Historique' designed by Philippe Stark in 1992 (You can also see them on www.stark.com and under 'Urban Furniture' or at http://paulfesta.com/uploaded_images/histoire-792308.JPG). People often say dismissively that Calgary (as ...more »
Just because Ottawa won't let us have THEIR National Portrait Gallery, doesn't mean we can't build one of our own! Hey, they refuse to build a proper museum for their own collection, so let's start our own collection! Canadians deserve a venue to celebrate the great Canadians of today, from the past, and those of the future! We could have a collection of paintings, wax figures (work with Madame Tussauds?), full scale ...more »
Invite every country in the world to select one artist and mount a massive exhibition at the Stampede Grounds. Temporary (or even permanent!) Pavillions would be built for each country. Modelled after successful art festivals/exhibitions in Venice and São Paulo, and to a lesser extent the Whitney Biennale in New York, it would attract hundreds of thousands of people from around the world to the city, and especially if ...more »
Imagine a giant horseshoe over the Bow River, similar to the Gateway Arch over St. Louis. An elevator could be inside to take people up to see the view. It could be on it's side, or slightly raised, and serve a bridge for pedestrians and cyclists.
Consider how well received Anish Kapoor's 'Cloud Gate' in Chicago has been. We could build a giant white chrome cowboy hat in Olympic Plaza or elsewhere that people would love to have their photos take in front of or even on top off! The hat could be laying upside down, to symbolize openness, allowing anyone to climb in, or it could be raised off the ground so people could huddle under it if it rained, suggesting that ...more »
Have you ever ridden the Star Wars simulator at Disneyland? Imagine if we created a virtual reality simulator that would allow small groups of 20 people at a time to sit in a small theatre that can be moved using hydraulics. The simulator would begin by zooming across the prairies, past grain elevators and wind-turbines, and then roar down Deerfoot Trail, into Stampede Park and into the point-of-view of a chuckwagon driver, ...more »
Create a chuckwagon video game for iPhone, Sony Playstation, Nintendo Wii, PCs, Mac, etc. that would simulate a chuckwagon race! You would begin by selecting from two options: existing riders and the horses and wagons that they race, or building your own team by selecting the types of horses you like, the shape, colour and sponsors on your wagon, and even create a driver/avatar of yourself! You could also select the race ...more »
CALGARY STAMPEDE: THE IMAX MOVIE
Commission or encourage IMAX to shoot a movie at the 2011 Stampede and have it premiere in 2012 a few weeks prior to the actual Stampede. Imagine a 4 story slow-motion image of a bull-rider, First Nations dancers, chuckwagons racing down the homestretch, rollercoasters on the midway, etc!
