Free Culture in 2012: What if every Tuesday in 2012 was "free culture night?" Everything from performing to visual arts, theatres to museums... free admission to anyone!
Lets make sure that in 2012, there is NO barrier to every Calgarian having amazing cultural experiences.
Calgary has already won the right to host the 2012 Magnetic North Theatre Festival. What if we made an effort to host other regional, national and international gatherings, festivals and galas in 2012? We could bring some things that normally happen in Toronto or Ottawa to Calgary, we could create our own conferences and galas.
We should focus on exporting excellence: the people, organizations, initiatives, technologies, art, etc. that have roots in Calgary and can compete in external markets. We should work to figure out what it is about Calgary that helped them achieve these qualities, and what can we do to help the world experience more Calgary???
We just visited Artist Ranch Project at the Western Oasis (complete with a wine bar!) at the Stampede. This project provides artist residencies at a ranch in Southern Alberta. The artists create work inspired by the residency, and this work is displayed during the Stampede. Calgary artists and cultural organizations could put together a national touring show (one big show together or several smaller shows) that would start to put a bigger emphasis on "exporting" Calgary's creativity. We already do this in a number of areas, but with extra support, 2012 could be a year when Canadians learn first hand what Calgary has to offer.
2012 should include an artist homecoming. Cultural organizations around the city should be encouraged to program artists that got their start or a major boost to their career in Calgary (alumni from our post secondaries, people born here, etc.), but now work elsewhere could be featured.
