A car-free downtown core!!! Like major european cities we could have a walkable and bikeable cultural core that is a major tourist destination. Picture patios, live music venues, art galleries, street vendors, electric transit shuttles & parks PLUS thousands of locals and tourists out enjoying the clean air. From the river to the railroad tracks (9th ave) seems like natural boundaries.
Help make a project in my community happen
What a better way to celebrate the history of Calgary than with thousands of historical markers throughout the city? If you've ever been to France, you've probably stopped to read a sleek 'Panneau Historique' designed by Philippe Stark in 1992 (You can also see them on www.stark.com and under 'Urban Furniture' or at http://paulfesta.com/uploaded_images/histoire-792308.JPG). People often say dismissively that Calgary (as ...more »
Provide a consulting team of a skilled arts administrator and fundraising expert to small- and medium-sized arts organizations to develop skills and capacity in revenue development, management and administration with the goal of building long-term self-sufficiency.
Invite every country in the world to select one artist and mount a massive exhibition at the Stampede Grounds. Temporary (or even permanent!) Pavillions would be built for each country. Modelled after successful art festivals/exhibitions in Venice and São Paulo, and to a lesser extent the Whitney Biennale in New York, it would attract hundreds of thousands of people from around the world to the city, and especially if ...more »
There should be an initiative for Calgary business movers and shakers to be paired with Calgary artists, musicians, dancers, poets etc. where they can commission and support new works for 2012. I don't mean corporate sponsors - I mean individuals. It would be an endeavor wherein business people come together with art people to produce a lasting legacy for Calgary.
If we are celebrating 100 years as a cultural centre of the West, I think it would be very interesting to create 100 items for Calgarians and visitors alike. Each item would be part of a bigger story and each item would be unique in it's own right. I have a couple of concepts in my mind right now that I am thinking we could mash up into one really cool concept. Do you remember the success of the Udderly Art program? ...more »

Fort Calgary at the confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers has long been described as the birthplace of the city and Calgary’s most important historic site. However, this European world view overlooks the Aboriginal history that dates back thousands of years - a history that is rooted in a sense of place rather than government and industry. The Bow and Elbow confluence was historically a meeting place for the Blackfoot, ...more »
Calgary could host major international and Canadian performing and visual artists during the year. The artists would be part of a series that would generate international interest in Calgary, and attract tourists to our city. The artists would be chosen to demonstrate our history, the diversity of our current cultural status, and our future aspirations.
I would like to see areas in the city that enable activities such as buskers, street musicians, street dancers and short plays and happenings where they won't be harassed by authorities. These could be administered areas designated for this type of use. For example, out front of the Plaza Theatre in Kensington. There is lots of sidewalk space there where people could accumulate to watch. Creating these designated ...more »
CALGARY STAMPEDE: THE IMAX MOVIE
Commission or encourage IMAX to shoot a movie at the 2011 Stampede and have it premiere in 2012 a few weeks prior to the actual Stampede. Imagine a 4 story slow-motion image of a bull-rider, First Nations dancers, chuckwagons racing down the homestretch, rollercoasters on the midway, etc!
It's time the world knows that Calgary is a world class culinary and cultural destination. Please vote for The Tasty Jazz Festival - "The World's Most Delicious Jazz Festival". As Canada’s Cultural Capital, Calgary would have the opportunity to start a new annual festival that invites the world to show off their very best food and jazz in a combined festival taking place in August at Olympic Plaza. As the inaugural ...more »
