The Great Canadian Tour

Calgary artists and cultural organizations could put together a national touring show (one big show together or several smaller shows) that would start to put a bigger emphasis on "exporting" Calgary's creativity. We already do this in a number of areas, but with extra support, 2012 could be a year when Canadians learn first hand what Calgary has to offer.

Please make DT alive at night for visitors and us !

There is no night life in Calgary. City feels dead and visitors have nowhere to go. Especially DT. There should be places that you could sit in - open till at least 2 AM everyday. People are here for conferences and have no clue what to do after hours as even shopping in DT is a challenge after hours. Please, could we have a safe places for people over 40 at night ? Would be lovely if there would be the music and art ...more »

Local Music Showcase

As a fan of music festivals I would like to see all Calgary musicians come together and perform in different venues divided by genres for one week. Similar to Sled Island but showcasing local talent. One venue may feature folk, another may host local DJ's, rock etc. Ideally this would be held over the summer hosted in many of our scenic parks/amphitheaters across the city. This will thrust the spotlight on the locally ...more »

Stampede DT Arts Festival

Stampede draws tens of thousands of visitors to Calgary for 10 days every summer. It would be great if those folks could see Calgary as it is the other 355 days a year - bursting at the seams with culture. I'd like to see the Stampede co-host an arts festival on the scale and calibre of the '88 Olympic Arts Festival (for those of you who remember - fabulous theatre, circus, visual arts, dance and more). And wouldn't ...more »

Dancing in the Streets

So You Think You Can Dance - the Festival! Let's get everyone dancing in the streets in a 3 day festival that showcases Calgary's and Canada's best professional dance companies in performances, and that gives every Calgarian a chance to dance in the streets, learn new dance forms (from ethnic to contemporary to whatever anyone brings to the festival) and people-watch. Can we get So You Think You Can Dance auditions ...more »

Great Street Challenge

The Great Street Challenge! We love to complain that our downtown isn't vibrant. Why wait for City Hall to do something? What if the building/business owners in each block of key walking routes in the downtown (1st St SW, 7th Ave for example) worked with a team of creative volunteers to make their block more fun and interesting for pedestrians, night and day? It could be a sudden transformation, over a week or weekend, ...more »

Street Food as an Art Form

Let's make street food an art form and part of our culture! How creative can we be in the design of the stands? How creative (and healthy) can we be in terms of the food served? Can we provide fun places to sit and chat with strangers while eating? This could be a major DT attraction - and could extend to other hot spots like Inglewood, 4th St/17th Ave, Kensington etc.

Nuit Blanche Calgary

I’ve hard talk online of a Calgary Nuit Blanche, an event DJ Kelly has been spearheading for some time. I believe this would be an excellent, annual addition to Calgary’s cultural events roster. If the popularity of the recent River of Light is any indication, it’s clear that Calgarians would relish the opportunity to enliven their city with all-night culture. DJ Kelly's Nuit Blanche proposal: http://djkelly.ca/2010/06/nuit-blanche-calgary-update/ ...more »

street festivals!

I think it should be a year full of festivals and parties. I would love to see some of the main streets closed off and turned into a street party. Like 17th ave, stephen ave, centre street, parts of mcloed trail etc and each one could have a different theme. Add these street festivals to the great events we already have in the city and it would make for an epic year!!
