Pull many of these ideas together into Nuit Blanche

Nuit Blanche is a wonder concept Toronto, and now New York, have borrowed from Paris. It is a large district wide series of art installation which welcome the citizen to engage with the art, with each other, and with the city at night. A very special event to experience. They usually run 7pm-7am but in september we could manage a 5pm-2am version.

The Offical Red Mile!

Make 17th ave officially the red mile! have all trees in red lights and an arch on both ends with "red mile" on it designed by local artists. it would make it so bright and would be a cool place to visit for tourists and locals and possibly drive more traffic for local businesses!!

Culture to drive tourism!

I just returned to Calgary after 2+ weeks in Chicago, where preserving heritage buildings and installing fabulously huge public art are ingrained, which is so opposed to what we have here. Even more amazing, their tourist office -- the equivalent of Tourism Calgary -- is part of their Civic Cultural Promotion department. Wouldn't it be wonderful to see Calgary driven to develop high culture to bring tourists, and not ...more »

street festivals!

I think it should be a year full of festivals and parties. I would love to see some of the main streets closed off and turned into a street party. Like 17th ave, stephen ave, centre street, parts of mcloed trail etc and each one could have a different theme. Add these street festivals to the great events we already have in the city and it would make for an epic year!!

Nuit Blanche Calgary

I’ve hard talk online of a Calgary Nuit Blanche, an event DJ Kelly has been spearheading for some time. I believe this would be an excellent, annual addition to Calgary’s cultural events roster. If the popularity of the recent River of Light is any indication, it’s clear that Calgarians would relish the opportunity to enliven their city with all-night culture. Street Food as an Art Form

Let's make street food an art form and part of our culture! How creative can we be in the design of the stands? How creative (and healthy) can we be in terms of the food served? Can we provide fun places to sit and chat with strangers while eating? This could be a major DT attraction - and could extend to other hot spots like Inglewood, 4th St/17th Ave, Kensington etc.

Great Street Challenge

The Great Street Challenge! We love to complain that our downtown isn't vibrant. Why wait for City Hall to do something? What if the building/business owners in each block of key walking routes in the downtown (1st St SW, 7th Ave for example) worked with a team of creative volunteers to make their block more fun and interesting for pedestrians, night and day? It could be a sudden transformation, over a week or weekend, ...more »
