Build piazzas and plazas in each community

Gut one street in the middle of each of Calgary's suburbs and create a pedestrian-only place for people to gather locally. Calgary lacks social spaces for informal gatherings, like Italy's piazzas or Spain's plazas. Having somewhere for the average family to go and run into neighbours is a sure-fire way to boost community spirit.

CALGARY 2012: Elbow and Bow RIVER Water Management

The Geological Time Scale of the Elbow and the Bow Rivers in Calgary There could be a project in Calgary, with the consulting of professional engineers: For the reconstruction of the Elbow and the Bow Rivers as commercial waterways that would be engineered to the scale and the depth of the old world (EUROPEAN) river canals. The purpose of this would be for the proper rivers and water management in the future generations ...more »

Pull many of these ideas together into Nuit Blanche

Nuit Blanche is a wonder concept Toronto, and now New York, have borrowed from Paris. It is a large district wide series of art installation which welcome the citizen to engage with the art, with each other, and with the city at night. A very special event to experience. They usually run 7pm-7am but in september we could manage a 5pm-2am version.

Sharing our stories

A city of a million people with a million stories. Facilitate a means of recording Calgarians' stories and broadcast these on the radio throughout the year. Perhaps a dedicated radio station, perhaps a partenrship with an existing station.

Culture to drive tourism!

I just returned to Calgary after 2+ weeks in Chicago, where preserving heritage buildings and installing fabulously huge public art are ingrained, which is so opposed to what we have here. Even more amazing, their tourist office -- the equivalent of Tourism Calgary -- is part of their Civic Cultural Promotion department. Wouldn't it be wonderful to see Calgary driven to develop high culture to bring tourists, and not ...more »

EVDS

As a grad student, I would love to see the University of Calgary's Faculty of Environmental Design involved. Be it a reconstruction of the latest Solar Decathlon project, or something new and sustainable, that can be used as a cooperative within the community, there is a lot of great design potential here! Check out the faculty's website, too!
