2012 should include an artist homecoming. Cultural organizations around the city should be encouraged to program artists that got their start or a major boost to their career in Calgary (alumni from our post secondaries, people born here, etc.), but now work elsewhere could be featured. We just visited Artist Ranch Project at the Western Oasis (complete with a wine bar!) at the Stampede. This project provides artist residencies at a ranch in Southern Alberta. The artists create work inspired by the residency, and this work is displayed during the Stampede. Calgary artists and cultural organizations could put together a national touring show (one big show together or several smaller shows) that would start to put a bigger emphasis on "exporting" Calgary's creativity. We already do this in a number of areas, but with extra support, 2012 could be a year when Canadians learn first hand what Calgary has to offer.
