  The Geological Time Scale of the Elbow and the Bow Rivers in Calgary

  There could be a project in Calgary, with the consulting of professional engineers:

  For the reconstruction of the Elbow and the Bow Rivers as commercial waterways that would be engineered to the scale and the depth of the old world (EUROPEAN) river canals.

  The purpose of this would be for the proper rivers and water management in the future generations of Calgarians so that they will have the engineering in place for dealing with the melting of the Bow Valley Corridor Glaciers on an advanced geological scale of time.

  With the Bow Valley Corridor water conservation and the engineering of the Elbow and the Bow River in place for the next 50 - 100 years, as a long term plan, the rivers and water management plan will enable the rivers to withhold the extra capacity of the last Bow Valley Corridor Geological Ice Age that is now completely melting.

  Realizing this will be the first step towards a comprehensive dialogue on how the Elbow and Bow River Waterway Systems should be managed for the future generations of Calgarians.

  There would essentially be two new waterways reconstructed and re-engineered within both of the Calgary river systems for handling the increased water flow and the increased water capacity of the Bow Valley Corridor Glacier Ice rivers and glaciated frozen ice.

  The depth and the re - engineering of both Calgary Rivers as old world waterway canals would also provide hundreds of years of valuable tourism opportunities on the waterway into Southern Alberta on a Working River System.

  The Time to Start Re - Engineering the Calgary River Systems is becoming a lost commodity of time that will become an increasing water management problem without the proper management of,

  Sharing our stories

  A city of a million people with a million stories. Facilitate a means of recording Calgarians' stories and broadcast these on the radio throughout the year. Perhaps a dedicated radio station, perhaps a partenrship with an existing station.

  EVDS

  As a grad student, I would love to see the University of Calgary's Faculty of Environmental Design involved. Be it a reconstruction of the latest Solar Decathlon project, or something new and sustainable, that can be used as a cooperative within the community, there is a lot of great design potential here!   Artists in Residence Extravaganza

  An Artist in Residence extravanganza! Put artists in all things that identify Calgary- the stampede, the landscape surrounding Calgary, the mountains, the river valley, the path system, the zoo, Olympic plaza, the c-train, the flames, the stampeders, U of C, 8th Ave, Fort Calgary, Heritage park, Glenmore reservoir... etc. Let them put a new interpretation on these areas.

  Apps4Calgary Competition!

  This past summer Edmonton had a great idea (taken from the lead of cities in the US) of having a competition to get software developers create Apps for mobile phones that showcase Edmonton. The City of Edmonton published data feeds for all kinds of Edmonton Information. In the end, they got a number of awesome apps created including ones specific to showcasing the Edmonton Fringe Festival and much much more. The great ...more »

  This past summer Edmonton had a great idea (taken from the lead of cities in the US) of having a competition to get software developers create Apps for mobile phones that showcase Edmonton. The great thing was they just opened up a ton of Edmonton Data, defined the judging criteria, and then left it totally open (as in - didn't specify what the apps needed to do).

  Turn empty lots into gardens

  There are empty lots through out the inner city. Developers have gone broke or lost interest. Some (Inglewood, Bridgeland) have sat empty for years! Let's turn all the empty lots into luscious community gardens, with wild space and seating.

  More Community Gardens/Cultural Centres!

  A city's culture is largely influenced by the food that grows there, how it's cooked and how it's shared. So we need more LOCALLY PRODUCED FOOD! A community garden is an excellent place for not only great food to be grown, but for ideas to be shared, relationships to be made and culture to be celebrated!   Poetry in the sidewalks.

  I read about this great public art project in the Twin Cities where the public was invited to submit poetry and a juried selection were chosed to be imprinted into new and refurbished sidewalks all around the two cities. Lovely, low cost, high impact, inclusive, engaged, accessible project. Fun!

  Make Culture a Part of City Planning Process

  Get the City of Calgary to sign on to Agenda 21 for Culture- an internationally recognized guideline to help local governments support the production and dissemination of culture for all citizens. We have plenty of ambitious and creative people in Calgary, but sometimes we lack the structural or systemic support to make good things last.   Get the City of Calgary to sign on to Agenda 21 for Culture- an internationally recognized guideline to help local governments support the production and dissemination of culture for all citizens.

  The Confluence

  The confluence of the Bow and Elbow Rivers at the site of Fort Calgary is the birthplace of the city. Just across from Fort Calgary and right at the confluence is St. Patrick’s island.   Commercial galleries take the work of their artists' all over the world to art fairs where they are exposed to serious, potential new buyers. We should have the same in Calgary. Over time it would bring buyers, artists, and representatives from contemporary galleries from all over the world!   Proposed over the years in City Council was the idea of having a "bridge" between the core and the Beltline. If I were to think in terms of building a civic legacy and had dollars at my disposal, I'd create a terraced park space over a block of the CP rail lines. For discussion sake, let's say between 4th and 5th Street, tying downtown culture with the walkable 11th Ave design district, 17th Ave nightlife, and 4th Street restaurants and boutiques. A midtown destination site would cut the psychological barrier between the two sections of the core and create a central meeting place between the two culturally thriving sections of the city.

  Summer on the greened park podium could be home to outdoor festivals, buskers, performers, musicians, or an open air market.

  To create winter interest, a mix of permanent, spectacular, contemporary sculpture and temporary participatory installations exploring the winterized urban environment.

  The Calgary Public Library is a huge supporter and provider of local cultural events. Events are usually free and include all Calgarians. Current funding levels threaten this incredibly valuable service. One of the best things we can do to preserve and encourage a greater commitment to local cultural events is to support the Calgary Public Library now. However, the sector is faced with unprecedented challenges in the areas of paid staff turnover, declining volunteer hours, increased demand for services, escalating operational costs, and anticipated lower public and private funding. This would then be the catalyst to a Cultural Archive of the City of Calgary Annually that would showcase a complete year of PHOTOGRAPHIC COLLECTIONS from artists, photographers, and cultural institutions. The Annual Photographic Archives of the City of Calgary would be available every year at the City of Calgary Municipal Building in the fall for a Collectors Edition Copy Book Fee of $25.00. So that the sales of the Annual Photographic Archives of Calgary 2012 - 2013, 2013 - 2014, 2014 - 2015 for the next 100 years would generate all of the book sale revenues to the Arts in Calgary. At the same time it would be creating a Cultural Legacy of Photographic Archives in the City of Calgary for the next 100 Years. A photographic archival history of Calgary for the next 100 years would also have the original photographic historical archives of 1912 - 2012 and would create a City of Calgary Photographic Archival Collection with 200 Years of History.   100 trees

  Plant one hundred trees at the main entrances to the city. perhaps incorporate a park that could include large sculptures from local artists that showcase ideas or themes that make this city so special
