We need big bonfires all the way down 8th avenue mall so that people can shop and socialize outside even in the middle of winter. Great for business and great for people. We have enough boring malls let's do something fun and revitalize the downtown in the middle of winter.
I experienced this in northern Sweden and yes it's possible yes it works and yes it can be done... !!!!

Bike racks that are both functional and visually stimulating. Similar to what David Byrne did for New York. Could be commissioned work for local artists to design them. This would both promote local art and artists, and promote more bicycle use!

There are few to no arts writers in Calgary! I am talking about CRITICAL art writing, not PROMOTIONAL art writing. This is a serious issue in this city. Arts writers are an important element to a healthy arts sector because it provokes discourse and communication about ideas, artistic processes, theories, and the connection between the arts and life. It promotes critical thinking skills in society. Many artists have been trying to fill this gap for a long time now. Artists cannot fill the roles of artists, art professors, art administrators, AND critical art writers too!

Free Culture in 2012: What if every Tuesday in 2012 was "free culture night?" Everything from performing to visual arts, theatres to museums... free admission to anyone!
Lets make sure that in 2012, there is NO barrier to every Calgarian having amazing cultural experiences.

I would like to see our green spaces used more for temporary art installations. Our current green spaces are seriously underutilized. This would provide more venues for exhibitions, and more art encounters for people using or passing by those spaces.

I recently read an article about people who are converting their high maintenance and water loving front and back yard lawns, with garden beds in order to plant potatoes and other vegetables. What a great idea! I hope to see more yards and green spaces converted to vegetable and flower growing areas.

I'd like to see Calgary set a new Guinness World Record for the largest participation in singing the song "I'd Like To Teach the World To Sing (In Perfect Harmony)." Anyone can sing, everyone welcome, no auditions! I would also love to see a sign language choir performing to this song. Possible venues - Canada Olympic Park or McMahon Stadium. Possible corporate sponsor - The Coca Cola Company. Celebrating community spirit ...more »

Lets let every calgarian become a great artist and have there art viewed in public with chalk art!
We should simply suggesting that everyone go out and create there work of art on the streets and sidewalks of calgary with sidewalk chalk.
Promote a huge one day event where everyone and anyone with an idea, sidewalk chalk and time to create, can participate. Any part of the city with sidewalks, roads, pathways can becomes a blank canvas to create.
Sidewalk chalk is cheaper than paint, and will wash off during the next rain. Everybody from families, companies, the elderly, young children, collage and university students, low income families, the poor and homeless, disabled people, tourists and business men and women can even become great artists and be part of this historic citywide event.
There art and creativity will be part of the greater picture, and be included in the most colorful and creative city in the world, if only for one day.
Lets turn calgary streets and sidewalks into a blank canvas for everyone to create, and make Calgary the most creative and colorful city in the world!

Create a Calgary Pass that includes admission to Calgary's attractions like the zoo, Heritage Park, Glenbow Museum etc. and visitors or even Calgarians choose the places,say five, that they would like to visit and pay a flat sum of e.g.$40 instead of paying individual entrances. Aboriginal culture has been at the confluence of the rivers for many thousands of years. While Calgary 2012 seems to be about celebrating Western European culture. Aboriginal culture must be a consistent theme applied to all activities throughout the year in order for this celebration to be legitimate. How would diverse groups of refugees and immigrants want to view their adopted home in 100 years - discussing that topic with groups in more traditional (face to face, community forums) may provide additional insights on inspiring ...more »

I think on a Saturday during the summer that Calgary should try to have the largest ground float down the Elbow or Bow river. Thousands of people all having a blast and the more creative raft the better!! There could be two or three different launch points and BBQ's afterwards.

Let commuters take bikes onto the train at all hours! The current regulations clearly discourage cycling. A vertical storage system with hooks would help create space for all. More cyclists would also ease the parking issues we have around train stations.

Gut one street in the middle of each of Calgary's suburbs and create a pedestrian-only place for people to gather locally. Calgary lacks social spaces for informal gatherings, like Italy's piazzas or Spain's plazas. Having somewhere for the average family to go and run into neighbours is a sure-fire way to boost community spirit.

Perhaps one project could be the creation of a cultural loyalty / discount card. It would be credit card sized and via participating retailers, cultural organizations & institutions offer discounts to their events, performances, and at participating retailers (such as hotels, restaurants etc).
As a means of differentiating it from other loyalty cards, and giving it a unique WOW factor, it could be produced in series (making it collectable) with each series distinguished by different cover art. As a way to engage calgarians of all ages, a partnership with local school boards would have students in all grades/schools work on and submit artwork for inclusion on a series, Calgary businesses could submit designs for a series, Calgary heritage institutions could be featured in a series, work by Calgary artists could be included in a series ... etc. the number and types of series could be vast.
To promote active use, engagement and distribution to all calgarians a partnership with Canada Post & local print media outlets would be struck to include the card in mail & print delivery across the city, and participating organizations would have cards available to hand out to patrons.
What makes this interesting is it offers a way for all calgarians to participate on multiple levels, provides savings to calgarians for participating, and acts as a stimulus providing a boost to the local cultural & retail economy.

The city of New York has dedicated a series of buses to be moving monuments of people that have represented New York positively in their lives. The bus has a decal placed on it in honor of that person and a brief ceremony occurs. Calgary could do the same, honouring either Calgarians or people that have come to Calgary and become ambassadors for the city and it's people. We have musicians, athletes, actors, etc that ...more »

If I need help programming my microcontroller, or an installation artist needs stories, or a theatre producer needs help putting together his or her set, we should all get together and spend a bit of time helping out on each project, with the ability to get in touch with collaborators afterwards. So that cultural producers (and consumers) in ...more »

While we have several excellent, in-house theater companies, and a semi-regular season of travelling productions, Calgary has little-to-no experience with Broadway. Productions of both CATS (several years ago) and The Phantom of the Opera took several years to finally arrive, and while Mama Mia opens this fall, it has been played on the London West End for several years. We need to encourage Broadway productions – whether ...more »

Workshops ,seminars,events which explain various culture and faith and cultural events like calgary folk festival where people from all over the world can display their music,food,dance,literature.
Also more dialog between the member of diverse racial,and religious groups which will get rid of stereotyping,and present the right and true aspect.

Host a world record breaking line dance along 17th avenue. This acknowledges Calgary's history as "Cow Town", home of Stampede, Cowboys and fun ! All can participate, young and old.
