  Artist Homecoming

  2012 should include an artist homecoming. Cultural organizations around the city should be encouraged to program artists that got their start or a major boost to their career in Calgary (alumni from our post secondaries, people born here, etc.), but now work elsewhere could be featured. This should go throughout the creative industries: TV, film, dance, theatre, literary arts, dance, music... Any exhibit or show that ...more »

  Any exhibit or show that featured a Calgary artist would be promoted as part of a bigger series: Calgary making its mark around the world (or something like that...).

  DIY Awesomeness

  I'd suggest more grassroots arts. The Fringe here is a good start, but public places for DIY art would be very cool to see, maybe in public parks? With this as well should be more funding to cultural/arts related festivals. There's lots of good artists in Calgary who need a place to be seen.

  Artist Residencies can Inspire Us

  We just visited Artist Ranch Project at the Western Oasis (complete with a wine bar!) at the Stampede. This project provides artist residencies at a ranch in Southern Alberta. The artists create work inspired by the residency, and this work is displayed during the Stampede. Agriculture/ranching is an important part of Calgary's heritage and culture, and it was inspiring to see the fresh perspectives provided by the ...more »

The artists create work inspired by the residency, and this work is displayed during the Stampede. Agriculture/ranching is an important part of Calgary's heritage and culture, and it was inspiring to see the fresh perspectives provided by the artists participating in the project.

  What if we had more residencies like this during 2012? And we could expand it to other aspects of Calgary's culture: oil & gas, sports, urban growth, ethnic diversity, etc. And we could expand it beyond visual arts...

  A Poet Laureate for Calgary

  Not many people know it but Calgary has the most vibrant poetry community in Canada. In 2012 we should appoint a Poet Laureate for Calgary - there are certainly many poets who could fill the roll.

  Visual Arts Production Space

  Calgary is in desperate need of more visual arts production spaces. A city that exhibits work is only end-product oriented. Providing affordable production space keeps the creative wheels turning in the communities where those studios are located.   Calgary: The City Under The Arch

  I'd love to see the city commission artists to create "Calgary: The City Under The Arch", by building permanent arch-shaped sculptures large and small, indoors and especially outdoors (impervious to Calgary's weather) in public areas (similar to the cow-art project a number of years back).

  Studio Crawls

  More studio crawls during various arts festivals in the city. We need to bring our audience into the production end of things where artists can talk to their audience about their processes and ideas, not just end products.

  THE FUTURE: CALGARY 2112

  Commission 100 artists, architects, designers, writers, etc. to produce their vision of Calgary in 2112. While we celebrate the history of our city, let's also look forward to imagine what Calgary will be a hundred years from now! Will we have flying cars and clothes that collect solar energy, or will we living along the shores of a vast new ocean after the polar ice caps have melted? What will our architecture look like, ...more »

  monthly art walk

  A Go See Art night once a month. Galleries synchronize their openings to the same night. A map (online or in print) would indicate participating venues. Establishments other than galleries might wish to participate. Viewing art is a happening in itself. It doesn't require a lot of resources to initiate.

  Civic Art Studio

  Take the practice of the studio artist and apply it to the consideration of civic life and public spaces. This art residency situates artists in civic and community spaces for specific periods of time (generally 1-4 months in duration). The artist must engage and respond to the particulars of the site and negotiate between their own artistic concerns and those of the community and the place. Rather than turning the site ...more »

  Take the practice of the studio artist and apply it to the consideration of civic life and public spaces.   Public Art Mentorship

  A public art project which enables a student(s) to mentor with an established artist. The goal is not only to foster collaboration between the experienced and the inexperienced, but to also foster collaboration multi-generationally.   CALGARY: THE CONCERT/MUSIC ALBUM

  Have Canada's best musicians write one song each about Calgary, regardless of whether it is positive or not. Then have each artist perform the song live (wherever they are in the world) and broadcast the 'concert' over the internet. Imagine a concert with Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, New Pornographers, Arcade Fire, Feist, Pine Tarts, Brasstronaut, etc. sharing their feelings about Calgary! Even more ambitious would be ...more »

  Celebrartion of Local Filmmakers

  I would like to see a new film festival at the Plaza Theatre for our many wonderful local actors, producers, directors and writers to be showcased including those working through the disability arts.

  Artmobile Convoy

  

  Artmobile convoy... vintage trailers used as galleries rolling through town in spring/summer/fall exhibiting in parking lots and at the side of the road in front of coffee shops, in the stampede parade, gay pride, lilac festival... One trailer for each Artist-run centre or for independent curators...

  Swede It Up

  I'd like to see ordinary Calgarians making films. A tall order to be sure, but I'm not necessarily talking about original films. I'm talking about swedes. For those not already aware, the concept is from the flim "Be Kind Rewind" by Michel Gondry. A swede is 3-5 minute remake of a film that has already been released BKR features a local story. So I would propose a swede festival encompassing two categories of entry: ...more »

  I'd like to see ordinary Calgarians making films. A tall order to be sure, but I'm not necessarily talking about original films. I'm talking about swedes.

  For those not already aware, the concept is from the flim "Be Kind Rewind" by Michel Gondry. A swede is 3-5 minute remake of a film that has already been released BKR features a local story.

  So I would propose a swede festival encompassing two categories of entry: (1) The Remake and; (2) The Local Swede.

  With any look we could get Mr. Gondry to attend to discuss his ideas on amateur artistic creation, and community film making.

  After a brief search it appears the city of Fresno in California does something similar (http://www.swedefest.com/), and we should be next!

  This project will explore the progress of Calgary’s 10-year Plan to End Homelessness through art. Interested artists will be contracted to engage the homeless community in numerous artistic initiatives over the year that aim to sustain the public dialogue on the issues and experience of homelessness. Initiatives should provide homeless art-makers with the opportunity to add to the discourse through creative expression, while offering a support network of mentorship and personal development.

  Export Excellence

  We should focus on exporting excellence: the people, organizations, initiatives, technologies, art, etc. that have roots in Calgary and can compete in external markets. We should work to figure out what it is about Calgary that helped them achieve these qualities, and what can we do to help the world experience more Calgary???

  Horse Related Market

  Have a "horse" related market with Equine art, tack, anything related to the horse industry. Artist should not be restricted to Galgary artists only. Let the whole world celebrate our horses!
