Take the practice of the studio artist and apply it to the consideration of civic life and public spaces. This art residency situates artists in civic and community spaces for specific periods of time (generally 1-4 months in duration). The artist must engage and respond to the particulars of the site and negotiate between their own artistic concerns and those of the community and the place. Rather than turning the site into a subject, artists are encouraged to focus on the process of creating socially engaging art in public settings. The program encourages studio artists to use civic spaces and community settings as the source for their art practice, thereby providing them the opportunity to engage in similar considerations around site and place, as artists who maintain a public art practice.
Placing artists in unexpected spaces and encouraging interaction with various civic entities promotes new and innovative working methods for both art-making and civic engagement.
