Nuit Blanche Calgary

I’ve hard talk online of a Calgary Nuit Blanche, an event DJ Kelly has been spearheading for some time. I believe this would be an excellent, annual addition to Calgary’s cultural events roster. If the popularity of the recent River of Light is any indication, it’s clear that Calgarians would relish the opportunity to enliven their city with all-night culture. Please make DT alive at night for visitors and us !

There is no night life in Calgary. City feels dead and visitors have nowhere to go. Especially DT. There should be places that you could sit in - open till at least 2 AM everyday. People are here for conferences and have no clue what to do after hours as even shopping in DT is a challenge after hours. Please, could we have a safe places for people over 40 at night ? Would be lovely if there would be the music and art ...more »

Idea On Fire !

We need big bonfires all the way down 8th avenue mall so that people can shop and socialize outside even in the middle of winter. Great for business and great for people. We have enough boring malls let's do something fun and revitalize the downtown in the middle of winter.

I experienced this in northern Sweden and yes it's possible yes it works and yes it can be done... !!!!

More Community Gardens/Cultural Centres!

A city's culture is largely influenced by the food that grows there, how it's cooked and how it's shared. So we need more LOCALLY PRODUCED FOOD! A community garden is an excellent place for not only great food to be grown, but for ideas to be shared, relationships to be made and culture to be celebrated! Think of this: a community garden marketplace with local foods, musicians, visual artists, etc. all coming together ...more »

More Public Funding for Existing Art Organizations

More funding for the arts to strengthen existing organizations. Calgary has a strong arts sector. However, the sector is faced with unprecedented challenges in the areas of paid staff turnover, declining volunteer hours, increased demand for services, escalating operational costs, and anticipated lower public and private funding. More public funding dollars would help to strengthen our current organizations enabling them ...more »

Artist Homecoming

2012 should include an artist homecoming. Cultural organizations around the city should be encouraged to program artists that got their start or a major boost to their career in Calgary (alumni from our post secondaries, people born here, etc.), but now work elsewhere could be featured. This should go throughout the creative industries: TV, film, dance, theatre, literary arts, dance, music... Any exhibit or show that ...more »

Car-free core!!!

A car-free downtown core!!! Like major european cities we could have a walkable and bikeable cultural core that is a major tourist destination. Picture patios, live music venues, art galleries, street vendors, electric transit shuttles & parks PLUS thousands of locals and tourists out enjoying the clean air. From the river to the railroad tracks (9th ave) seems like natural boundaries.

Stampede DT Arts Festival

Stampede draws tens of thousands of visitors to Calgary for 10 days every summer. It would be great if those folks could see Calgary as it is the other 355 days a year - bursting at the seams with culture. I'd like to see the Stampede co-host an arts festival on the scale and calibre of the '88 Olympic Arts Festival (for those of you who remember - fabulous theatre, circus, visual arts, dance and more). And wouldn't ...more »

UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES NEED TO BE IN DOWNTOWN

Agree totally, Calgary needs to bring the college campus downtown. College kids wil hang out 24/7 in the core which will create ambiance and small business will come. These single people don't sleep, they are musician, bohemian, creative, artsy, young, they will add action and life to the Core. I have lived in Montreal and have visited big, trendy cities in Canada and US, I noticed that Universities contribute lots ...more »

DIY Awesomeness

I'd suggest more grassroots arts. The Fringe here is a good start, but public places for DIY art would be very cool to see, maybe in public parks? With this as well should be more funding to cultural/arts related festivals. There's lots of good artists in Calgary who need a place to be seen.

HISTORICAL MARKERS

What a better way to celebrate the history of Calgary than with thousands of historical markers throughout the city? If you've ever been to France, you've probably stopped to read a sleek 'Panneau Historique' designed by Philippe Stark in 1992 (You can also see them on www.stark.com and under 'Urban Furniture' or at http://paulfesta.com/uploaded_images/histoire-792308.JPG). People often say dismissively that Calgary (as ...more »

Local Music Showcase

As a fan of music festivals I would like to see all Calgary musicians come together and perform in different venues divided by genres for one week. Similar to Sled Island but showcasing local talent. One venue may feature folk, another may host local DJ's, rock etc. Ideally this would be held over the summer hosted in many of our scenic parks/amphitheaters across the city. This will thrust the spotlight on the locally ...more »

Artist Residencies can Inspire Us

We just visited Artist Ranch Project at the Western Oasis (complete with a wine bar!) at the Stampede. This project provides artist residencies at a ranch in Southern Alberta. The artists create work inspired by the residency, and this work is displayed during the Stampede. Agriculture/ranching is an important part of Calgary's heritage and culture, and it was inspiring to see the fresh perspectives provided by the ...more »

Great Street Challenge

The Great Street Challenge! We love to complain that our downtown isn't vibrant. Why wait for City Hall to do something? What if the building/business owners in each block of key walking routes in the downtown (1st St SW, 7th Ave for example) worked with a team of creative volunteers to make their block more fun and interesting for pedestrians, night and day? It could be a sudden transformation, over a week or weekend, ...more »

Neato Bike Racks!

Bike racks that are both functional and visually stimulating. Similar to what David Byrne did for New York. Could be commissioned work for local artists to design them. This would both promote local art and artists, and promote more bicycle use!

Calgary Phone App

Create a cell phone application that keeps users informed on all upcoming events in Calgary, with minute by minute updates! Calgary has a lot to offer but most people are too unaware because we have minimal media outlets. We need to build a free app that can inform the population. Think of the possibilities this app could offer, how many times have you had the urge to get out and take in the city but nowhere to go? ...more »

Support the Calgary Public Library

The Calgary Public Library is a huge supporter and provider of local cultural events. Events are usually free and include all Calgarians. Current funding levels threaten this incredibly valuable service. One of the best things we can do to preserve and encourage a greater commitment to local cultural events is to support the Calgary Public Library now. Be sure to vote for a mayor who says "YES" to the Calgary Public ...more »

We need CRITICAL art writers!

There are few to no arts writers in Calgary! I am talking about CRITICAL art writing, not PROMOTIONAL art writing. This is a serious issue in this city. Arts writers are an important element to a healthy arts sector because it provokes discourse and communication about ideas, artistic processes, theories, and the connection between the arts and life. It promotes critical thinking skills in society. Many artists have ...more »

Make Culture a Part of City Planning Process

Get the City of Calgary to sign on to Agenda 21 for Culture- an internationally recognized guideline to help local governments support the production and dissemination of culture for all citizens. We have plenty of ambitious and creative people in Calgary, but sometimes we lack the structural or systemic support to make good things last. Making cultural planning part of city operations would have a positive impact on ...more »
