  The Great Street Challenge! We love to complain that our downtown isn't vibrant. Why wait for City Hall to do something? What if the building/business owners in each block of key walking routes in the downtown (1st St SW, 7th Ave for example) worked with a team of creative volunteers to make their block more fun and interesting for pedestrians, night and day? It could be a sudden transformation, over a week or weekend, or even overnight...but it should trigger lasting change and awareness of what our downtown could and should be.

Let's get everyone dancing in the streets in a 3 day festival that showcases Calgary's and Canada's best professional dance companies in performances, and that gives every Calgarian a chance to dance in the streets, learn new dance forms (from ethnic to contemporary to whatever anyone brings to the festival) and people-watch. Can we get So You Think You Can Dance auditions to be part of the event? We can try!

  Stampede draws tens of thousands of visitors to Calgary for 10 days every summer. It would be great if those folks could see Calgary as it is the other 355 days a year - bursting at the seams with culture. I'd like to see the Stampede co-host an arts festival on the scale and calibre of the '88 Olympic Arts Festival (for those of you who remember - fabulous theatre, circus, visual arts, dance and more). And wouldn't it be great if it happened every year, not just in 2012!

  Lets let every calgarian become a great artist and have there art viewed in public with chalk art!

  We should simply suggesting that everyone go out and create there work of art on the streets and sidewalks of calgary with sidewalk chalk.

  Promote a huge one day event where everyone and anyone with an idea, sidewalk chalk and time to create, can participate. Any part of the city with sidewalks, roads, pathways can becomes a blank canvas to create.

  Sidewalk chalk is cheaper than paint, and will wash off during the next rain. Everybody from families, companies, the elderly, young children, collage and university students, low income families, the poor and homeless, disabled people, tourists and business men and women can even become great artists and be part of this historic citywide event.

  There art and creativity will be part of the greater picture, and be included in the most colorful and creative city in the world, if only for one day.

  Lets turn calgary streets and sidewalks into a blank canvas for everyone to create, and make Calgary the most creative and colorful city in the world!

  As a fan of music festivals I would like to see all Calgary musicians come together and perform in different venues divided by genres for one week. Similar to Sled Island but showcasing local talent. One venue may host folk music, the other classical, rock etc. Ideally this would be held over the summer hosted in many of our scenic parks across the city.

  The Calgary Tower, a recognized landmark of our beautiful city, has long since passed its prime. Downtown office buildings tower over it, obscuring the 360 degree view. Like The London Eye, the Star of Nanching or the Daikanransha in Odaiba, Japan, The Calgary Wheel would be striking against our current skyline, making us instantly recognizable to the world as one of the few cities to offer such an attraction.

  Placed just beyond the downtown area, the wheel would provide a birds-eye view of the nearby Rocky mountains, the Bow river, the Pengrowth Saddledome and Stampede grounds, the rolling foothills and sparkling downtown. Running all year, viewers could watch the seasons change from fresh greens to muted reds and golds to a dazzling frost-covered wonderland.

  I'd like to see ordinary Calgarians making films. A tall order to be sure, but I'm not necessarily talking about original films. I'm talking about swedes.

  For those not already aware, the concept is from the flim "Be Kind Rewind" by Michel Gondry. A swede is 3-5 minute remake of a film that has already been released BKR features a local story.

  So I would propose a swede festival encompassing two categories of entry: (1) The Remake and; (2) The Local Swede.

  With any look we could get Mr. Gondry to attend to discuss his ideas on amateur artistic creation, and community film making.

  After a brief search it appears the city of Fresno in California does something similar (http://www.swedefest.com/), and we should be next!

  Especially DT. There should be places that you could sit in - open till at least 2 AM everyday. People are here for conferences and have no clue what to do after hours as even shopping in DT is a challenge after hours. Please, could we have a safe places for people over 40 at night ? Would be lovely if there would be the music and art to look at ( both representing our local culture). Maybe there is a info about existing places offering something to do at night in the Core ? I'm tired from explaining that all is close because it is not Friday !

How would diverse groups of refugees and immigrants want to view their adopted home in 100 years - discussing that topic with groups in more traditional (face to face, community forums) may provide additional insights on inspiring Calgarians and the world to establish our legacy as a cultural centre of Canada.

  With Cultural Arts Collaboration involving major sponsorship funding, Calgary 2012 could start the design of a Museum and Art Gallery Collection for the Modern Arts.

  This Modern Cultural Museum for the Contemporary Arts in Calgary 2012 could also include An Educational Centre for the Arts.

  In partnership with all the major cultural organizations in Calgary 2012. Part of the Modern Cultural Museum Collection could include a Cultural Project that could possibly create the Largest Mosaic in Canada.

  This would be a catalyst for the Contemporary Arts Museum in Calgary 2012 as the Cultural Capital of Canada for 2012, specifically contributing to the Calgary 2012 bid as the Cultural Capital of Canada.

  For Calgary 2012 as the Cultural Centre of Canada there would have to be a very significant contribution to culture that could include ongoing funding from all levels of government.

  By creating a Cultural Fund for a Modern Cultural Museum for the Contemporary Arts in Calgary, the ongoing support with funding and with the possible creation of the Contemporary Arts Museum in Calgary, Alberta, Canada it would be a Cultural Centre for the Arts with the long term benefit of supporting past, present, and future collections of All Artistic Forms of Expression.

  Aboriginal culture has been at the confluence of the rivers for many thousands of years. While Calgary 2012 seems to be about celebrating Western European culture. Aboriginal culture must be a consistent theme applied to all activities throughout the year in order for this celebration to be legitimate. And, while a specific First Nations Festival is a great annual event, it will considered tokenism or marginalization of aboriginal cultural heritage if the broader amtter of aboriginal culture is not a core element of all activities.

  An innovative production that puts 100 everyday Calgarians front and centre. Casting starts with a single person. This first person has 24 hours to find another participant, and they then find another, and so on, until the full 100 are linked. Casting is dictated by a series of search criteria based upon Calgary’s demographics. All 100 participants participate in the project’s performance, becoming a dynamic array of different voices and stories. 100% features a live band and the lives of 100 individuals that now make up our city 100 years after its beginning.

  The idea is based upon a concept the 2011 Push Festival (Vancouver) is developing, but I believe it could be adapted and would reflect the Calgaryness of Calgary.

  It's time the world knows that Calgary is a world class culinary and cultural destination.

  Please vote for The Tasty Jazz Festival - "The World's Most Delicious Jazz Festival". As Canada’s Cultural Capital, Calgary would have the opportunity to start a new annual festival that invites the world to show off their very best food and jazz in a combined festival taking place in August at Olympic Plaza.

  As the inaugural Tasty Jazz Festival, I suggest inviting the city of New Orleans, Louisiana to come to Calgary and bring it’s very best food and jazz to share with Calgarians. As the birthplace of jazz, New Orleans is a perfect choice as the first guests to share their exquisite culinary and music traditions.

  Future Tasty Jazz invitees may include Tokyo, New York City, Chicago, London, Paris, Rio or even entire countries such as Norway, Spain, Finland, Germany, Cuba etc.

  As 2012 is the 100th anniversary of The Calgary Stampede, I argue that it’s time for Calgary to begin a new tradition of showing the world much more than just Calgary’s western heritage because Calgary is much more: it’s a culinary and cultural destination. By inviting the world to teach us about their food and jazz they will experience ours in the process.

Then have each artist perform the song live (wherever they are in the world) and broadcast the 'concert' over the internet. Imagine a concert with Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, New Pornographers, Arcade Fire, Feist, Pine Tarts, Brasstronaut, etc. sharing their feelings about Calgary! Even more ambitious would be to invite artists from around the world to visit Calgary for a week and write a song. Imagine Puff Daddy, Justin Timberlake, Janelle Monae, Bon Jovi, etc. and what they'd write about Calgary?!

  What a better way to celebrate the history of Calgary than with thousands of historical markers throughout the city? If you've ever been to France, you've probably stopped to read a sleek 'Panneau Historique' designed by Philippe Stark in 1992 (You can also see them on www.stark.com and under 'Urban Furniture' or at http://paulfesta.com/uploaded_images/histoire-792308.JPG). People often say dismissively that Calgary (as most of Western North America) has no history. Of course this is absurd! There have been people living here for 11,000 years! Wouldn't it be nice to stand on a street corner downtown and read about how Peigan First Nations people 'considered this spot sacred' or that David Thompson 'camped here in 1787', or that James Macleod 'surveyed the land here in 1876'. I'm pretty sure Mark Twain spoke in Calgary. Where was that?! Imagine how cool it would be to bring the history of this wonderful city to life with markers reminding people of all the incredible things that have happened here!

  Just because Ottawa won't let us have THEIR National Portrait Gallery, doesn't mean we can't build one of our own! Hey, they refuse to build a proper museum for their own collection, so let's start our own collection! Canadians deserve a venue to celebrate the great Canadians of today, from the past, and those of the future! We could have a collection of paintings, wax figures (work with Madame Tussauds?), full scale dioramas of events such as the Trial of Louis Riel, theatres with short films celebrating Canadian history, etc.
